Electrical Testing & Characterization of Upper-Limb Prostheses
TEAMMATES:
Infinite Biomedical Technologies (IBT) engineering team
Senior Engineer
2 Electrical Engineering interns
ROLE:
Conducted electrical characterization of prosthetic devices to ensure compatibility with IBT products, working under the guidance of the CTO and Senior Engineer while collaborating with two other interns.
CHALLENGE:
Ensuring Seamless Integration of Commercial Prostheses with IBT Products
The challenge was to characterize and optimize the electrical and control specifications of new upper-limb prosthetic systems, ensuring they were fully compatible with IBT’s existing products. This involved tackling complex electrical requirements across various prosthetic devices and developing custom communication solutions to guarantee smooth, reliable integration.
SOLUTION:
Developed tailored solutions for electrical and embedded systems.
Optimized Electrical Specifications: Conducted comprehensive testing and refinement of electrical specs for 9 multi-articulated prostheses, ensuring seamless compatibility with IBT products.
Custom Integration Solutions: Designed 8 custom wiring diagrams to bridge complex electrical connections, resolving compatibility issues between prosthetic systems and IBT technology.
Innovative Communication Solutions: Collaborated with external teams to develop USB-to-Serial communication solutions (UART, i2C, CAN), enabling smooth data flow and device synchronization.
Verification & Compliance: Authored and executed 12 verification protocols, ensuring full compliance with Design Control standards and electrical compatibility requirements.
Circuit Design & Testing: Designed and soldered custom passive circuits and programmed motor drivers using Arduino to test a range of <11V prosthetic components, including hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders.
