Design & Manufacture for Off-Road Vehicle Wheel Hubs
TEAMMATES
JHU Blue Jay Racing team
ROLE
Machine Shop Devotee, Endurance Event Driver, Wheel Hubs Designer
OBJECTIVE
Design wheel hubs and fabricate suspension parts for off-road, Baja SAE competition vehicle while minimizing unsprung mass for better vehicle performance
RESULTS
Machined 15+ components
Designed hubs with 17% weight reduction
Successfully designed for manufacturability, fabricating hubs in-house after water-jetting plates
Survived rugged events at competition
Design, Manufacture, Race!
Analyzed loads, simulated FEAs, and optimized load transfer
Managed assemblies with tight, 7-interface packaging in Solidworks 3D CAD
Drafted manufacturing drawings for lathe and water jet, completed BOMs, and devised welding jigs
Manufactured 15+ components like differential gears, uprights, and hubs using mill, lathe, and shop tools
Created transition fits (bearings, hubs) and regulated ±.002” tolerances (internal circlips) with inspection instruments (gauges, calipers)
